Dear Ms. Geronimo,
Let me begin this letter by quoting a line from your latest film, It Takes a Man and a Woman:
“Minsan, sa kagustuhan nating maging pinakamagaling, nakakalimutan nating maging mabuti.”
People in the industry describe your achievements in superlatives, and most would not disagree. The Popstar Royalty. The Record Breaker. The Box Office Queen. In this world of superstar divas, pinapaniwala mo kami na oo, posibleng maging magaling at napapanatili pa rin ang pagiging isang mabuting tao. You inspire all of us and make us believe that goodness can indeed conquer everything.
People love you for many different reasons. They love you because of your unparalleled talent. They love you because of your good heart. They love you because of the person that you are. They love you because of your innate charisma. Bilang tagahanga mo nitong mga nakaraang taon, minahal kita dahil sa mga rasong iyon. But as the years go by, I’ve come to realize that people admire you not just for those reasons but more so because you inspire us. Because of who you are and where you are right now, you keep people’s dreams alive. You give us hope that indeed, dreams do come true.
You are an inspiration to that teenage girl from the slums who watch you perform on TV from a small hole in her neighbor’s wall. Or the OFW who, when she hears you sing during your concert tours abroad, can forget for a moment that she is a thousand miles away from home. Or to that dying little child, who will forever remember your soothing voice when you sang to her.
Even in people’s every day existence, you still are an inspiration. Sarah G Live, may just be another of the many shows on TV, but to the mother of five who works hard all week, that show provided for a respite from a tiring and sometimes monotonous life. Expressions may just be one of the many albums in the market, but for a young woman who had had to mend a broken heart, it was a tool in her healing. Perfect 10 is one of the many concerts to choose from this year, but for a teen-age boy who saved every peso he can to be able to buy the cheapest ticket, it is the only choice. For at least two hours, he can leave behind the heartaches of being teased ‘bakla’ at school and the disappointed look of his father at home, and instead imagine that one day, he could also be a concert performer.
These are not earth-shattering events, but in your own way, you have affected the lives of these people. You can make us believe that in spite of the many obstacles life may throw our way, there is always that rainbow after the rain. We know, because as you’ve said, “it is about never letting go of one’s dreams”. And you never did let go. And for that, we will always be grateful.
Maligayang ika-sampung anibersaryo, pinakamamahal naming prinsesa.
